Painting as an Artform – After
2 October – 8 November 2015
Mundaring Arts Centre – Mundaring, Western Australia
Curator Anna Sabadini asks, “Why paint in this day and age of all possible virtual realities?” She explains, relevant art necessarily needs to respond to its times, but in times where everything is of the now, an emphasis arguably responsible for the predictability of much of today’s art, there is an argument for the value of the past as a touchstone for quality, depth, richness and integrity. Anna invited a group of painters recognized for their exploration of media and their connection to process and materiality to respond to the brief, The Love of Painting. Unlike many group shows, Anna worked with the group to develop ideas and provide solidarity and mentorship as they participated in 4 atelier-type review sessions held quarterly over a year. Artists include Lesley Munro, Felicity Sivewright, David Ledger, Anna Sabadini, Ben Joel, Bec Juniper, Mel Dare, George Haynes and Nigel Hewitt.
